Format-Notator software dowenload from PC TO 1040Ste

Postby bambam420 » Tue Nov 16, 2010 11:05 am

Hey ya'll....Guten tag....I'm running a quadcore i7 Cubase 5.5 system with the lastest gear; I have a ton of older material created on Nototaor 3.0 software. I've 2 STe's but am having disk regocnize problems. Not sure if thewre's a disk issue or a floppy drive issue.
1.) can I get software that will allow me to download into PC new Notator 3.16 & format it for use in an Atari 1040 STe.

2.) If I can't prep it for this "output" to floppy on PC, can I use utility that will allow me to use XP SP3 to create a new disk. I have the dongle for Notaor (bought it new....arg)....Anyone with advice-MIDI conversion tech's to allow midi files create on Notaor for use in Cubase 5.5.1....I know I sound a bit lame....system won't boot up so I can transfer my ol' tyracks....thx much no matter what! Bam peace

One thing to watch with Atari formatted floppy disks is that depending on the TOS version of the Atari they were formatted in, the PC may not be able to read them, also if any larger capacity formats were used, you will almost certainly have issues getting the PC to read the disk.

Having said that, using an emulator like Steem may help with reading old ST floppies, though as always with these things, there is no guarantee.

I know we have Notator XL on the site for download, which does work in Steem so you may be able to load the files into that and export them as MIDI files, failing that it may be possible for one of us to convert the files using something like Notator Logic on the Falcon (Which I have and know it can load these files and export them as MIDI files which can then be imported into Cubase).

Notator SL 3.21 is available here

Great stuff...thanks....upon my re-read, I wasn't all that clear (as your reply was...lol), so....have 2 1040 ste's & an ext floppy drive. None except boot-up of Notator from my orginal 3.0 disk. I bought the 2nd 1040 years back & managed to get sync, as for transfer from 1040 to PC Cubase. Howver, I had to re-boot constantly & after a few songs, I gave up.

Also, my like-new "font" disks also are rejected (inset disk-error).

If I could ignore that my 1st question would be: can I expect that a version of Notator downloaded to PC then to diskette will work on a 1040?? (have nomodem for 1040'S)....I think you answered this in your reply; otherwise, it would be great if I could in PC convert/extract the MIDI files, from the Notator disks...
No matter what, thx for your time & reply....cheers BB

There is another thing that can be tried to check the disk drives on the st. If you have a look in the featured articles section and in the hardware bit, there is an article on formatting floppy disks for the st series on modern computers. Format a disk and copy some random text files onto it then try and read it on the st. If your still getting read errors then the floppy driva is at fault and may need cleaning but if it reads the disk without issue the program disks may well be faulty.

If it turned out the disks are faulty all is not necessarily lost, the excellent diamond back utilities are still available and you can also try copying the faulty disk with fast copy or fast copy pro, something I've done in the past to rescue data from corrupt disks using the softwares "best guess" feature.

If I can help in any way, don't hesitate to ask,
