CAF works with HDDriver 8.23

Postby Waxjoz » Mon Jan 11, 2010 12:42 pm

Hello,

I've always used HDDriver 7.9 on my Falcon because reported problems with Cubase Audio Falcon and SCSI.

Recently I'd had to use HDDriver 8.23 because older versions wouldn't see the SD-card that replaced the broken IDI-harddisc.

Yesterday, I tried CAF with 5 stereo audio tracks and it just worked! No problems at all.

I have to say, that when I bought my Falcon, an experienced Atari technician in The Netherlands 'repaired' the famous SCSI hardware bug.

Anyone has any ideas or the same/other experiences?

:o :o What?!

I should revert back to HD 8.23 and try this on my Falcons. I just made an assumption about this issue and didn't even try it. I wonder if there's any published information on fixing the SCSI bug. Do you know if it's just a little solering job or a complete chip replacement?

If you can find any instructions on this, I'd be willing to open up my Falcon's, take pictures, and perform the mod for everyone's educational benefit.

Thanks for the update! Wow!

I'm not technical at all, the technician who helped was Michel Siethoff from Music Store 'De Staar' in Purmerend (near Amsterdam): destaar@planet.nl. I don't know if he still works there.

I did some research on the Dutch Atari Yahoo Group and the problems seem to have something to do with 'the clock'. You can recognise the bug by the 'clicks' when playing music.

The SCSI bug was famous. A friend of mine had a studio in the 90'ties. He was the first one in The Netherlands to buy a Falcon. At that time there was no music software developed yet. He had to wait for a year. When he got the right software finally, there was the SCSI-bug. He got so frustrated that he sold the Falcon.

CAF did work with HDDriver 8.23 but not any more

Postby Waxjoz » Mon Feb 01, 2010 10:27 pm

But it doesn't work any more after I've changed the (empty) NVRAM and added a co-processor. Now I got 'Can only play audio from SCSI drive', so CAF doesn't recognise my SCSI JAZ as SCSI any more.

So is it the NVRAM or the co-processor which don't work with the combination HDDRiver 8.23 and CAF? I can't go back to version 7.9 as long as I'm using the SD-card as harddisc.

If you want to use CAF again i've got an extra hard drive you can use instead of(or in addition to) the card . It's an iBM Travelstar 20 Gig.
Mal7921 says he has the same in one of his falcons
It fits inside the Falcon case without any problems or changes. There's a few very minor adjustments, nothing destructive! (ie..you turn the internal ide drive metal "stand" around 180 degrees, face the ribbon cable to the front and another little trick: a thin aluminum strip with 2 holes drilled in it placed alongside to hold drive level and to attach it to the other end).
With encouragement from Mal7921 i bought 2 laptop drives on ebay for $17 for the 2 of them. I got the Toshiba 20gig partitioned with a few tries and the HDDRIVER manual, so i've got the extra Harddrive kicking around if you want it just let me know, i'll send it to ya.
