Atari ST MIDI thru port vs soft MIDI thru.

Atari ST MIDI thru port vs soft MIDI thru.

As you may or may not know the Atari ST has a combined MIDI out/thru socket which can be separated with the appropriate wiring of a cable/adapter and this got me to thinking about what the actual timing difference is between the Atari's hardware MIDI thru socket and the software based MIDI thru of programs like Cubase is that use the Atari's MIDI out, so I conducted a test using two identical Akai S2000 samplers, one feed by the MIDI out and the other by the MIDI thru, one recorded to the right channel of a modern computer and the other recorded to the left, both booted from the same OS loaded with the same sounds and the result I got was 2ms of latency using the soft MIDI thru in comparison to the hardware MIDI thru.
